What It Costs — and Why That Surprises People

Alberta's tire recycling fee is charged when a tire is sold, not when it is thrown away. Every new passenger or light truck tire bought in this province carries a $5 environmental fee, collected at the point of sale and remitted to the Alberta Recycling Management Authority. That money is what funds the collection and processing system.

Which means the recycling on the tires currently sitting in your garage was already paid for, by you, when those tires were bought. A shop charging you again at disposal is charging for handling, not for the levy — and it is worth knowing the difference so you can ask the question.

How Alberta's Tire Recycling Actually Works

Alberta has run a tire recycling program since 1992 and it is one of the more successful ones in the country — more than 154 million tires recycled since it started.

The system works through approved collection sites, of which there are over 2,200 across the province, mostly tire and vehicle dealers. Tires dropped at a collection site go to registered processors, who turn them into something else rather than burying them.

What they become is more interesting than most people expect: playground surfacing, sidewalk blocks, rubber matting, roofing tiles, landscaping mulch, and tire-derived aggregate used in road construction and in drainage layers at landfill sites. A set of worn winter tires has a reasonable chance of ending up under a playground somewhere in Alberta.

What We Take

What nobody in the province takes through this program is a tire that has been cut up, burned, or filled with foam or concrete. If yours has been modified, call before making the trip.

Please Do Not Do These Things Instead

Tires are the one piece of automotive waste that genuinely causes trouble when it is dumped, which is why the program exists in the first place.

They do not decompose. They trap water and breed mosquitoes. A pile of them is a serious fire hazard, and a tire fire is one of the hardest fires to put out and among the most toxic. Landfilling whole tires is banned in Alberta for exactly these reasons.

So: not the back alley, not the ravine, not the bin. The program is already paid for and there are more than two thousand places in the province that will take them, including this one.
