$XX an Hour. Here's Everything Else.
Our labour rate, how we quote, the parts we fit, and what our warranty covers. Including whether servicing here affects your factory warranty. It doesn't.
What We Charge, What We Fit, and What Happens If It Goes Wrong
Most shops will not put this on a website. We would rather you knew before you called.
This page covers our labour rate, how we quote, what parts we use, what the warranty actually covers, and the question we get asked more than any other — whether having your car serviced outside a dealership affects your factory warranty. It does not, and there is a law about it.
Our Labour Rate
$XX per hour. That is the rate for everything — diagnosis, repair, and anything else that takes shop time.
Dealership rates in Edmonton generally run higher, sometimes considerably, and that gap is most of why people move to an independent once a vehicle is out of warranty. The work is not different; the overhead behind it is.
How We Quote
You get the number before the work happens. If we open something up and find the job is larger than expected, we stop and call you — nobody here has authority to spend your money without asking.
Estimates are free. If you want to know roughly what something will cost before committing, call and describe it, and we will give you a range over the phone where we honestly can. Where we cannot, we will say so rather than guess — some faults genuinely cannot be priced without looking.
Diagnosis is charged, because it is real work. Reading a code takes ninety seconds; finding out why the code is there can take an hour with a scan tool and a wiring diagram. Our diagnostic fee is $XX and it comes off the repair if you go ahead with the work.
The Parts We Use
Quality aftermarket as standard, OEM when it matters or when you ask for it.
The OEM-versus-aftermarket argument is more nuanced than either side usually admits. For a lot of components — brake pads, filters, belts, suspension parts — a reputable aftermarket brand is made to the same standard or better, often in the same factory, for meaningfully less money. For some components, particularly electronics, sensors and anything with a calibration, OEM is genuinely the right answer and we will tell you so.
What we will not do is fit the cheapest available part and let you find out the difference in eight months. Budget brake pads wear faster, are noisier and are harder on rotors, so the cheaper job comes around again sooner. We would rather explain the trade-off than win on a quote.
If you have a preference either way, say so when you book and we will price it accordingly.
Our Warranty
Everything we fit carries the NAPA AutoPro nationwide parts and labour warranty, honoured at NAPA AutoPro shops across Canada rather than only at our door. If something we installed fails while you are in Kelowna or Winnipeg, it is covered there.
That nationwide element matters more than it sounds. A local shop's own guarantee is worth exactly as much as the shop's willingness to honour it and its continued existence. A network warranty is not.
Does Servicing Here Affect Your Factory Warranty?
No. This is the most common reason people stay at a dealership longer than they need to, and it is based on a misunderstanding.
Under Canada's federal Competition Act, a manufacturer cannot require dealer servicing as a condition of keeping a new vehicle warranty valid. To deny a warranty claim they have to demonstrate that the work an independent shop did actually caused the failure — servicing away from the dealer is not, on its own, grounds.
What they can legitimately require is that the maintenance was actually performed, that it used parts and fluids meeting the manufacturer's specification, and that it is documented. All three are straightforward.
So keep your invoices. Ours itemise the date, the mileage, the parts fitted and the fluid specifications used, which is exactly what a warranty department asks for. Put them in the glovebox and you are covered.
Scheduled Maintenance and Service Intervals
We can carry out your manufacturer's scheduled maintenance — the 30,000, 50,000 and 100,000 kilometre services — to the schedule in your owner's manual, and document it properly so your warranty stands.
One thing worth knowing: dealership 'service packages' at those intervals often bundle in items the manufacturer does not actually require at that mileage. We work from the manufacturer's schedule rather than a package, so if the book says your 50,000 service is an oil change, a filter and an inspection, that is what you get and that is what you pay for.
Bring your manual or tell us the year, make, model and mileage and we will look up what is genuinely due.
Common Questions
-
Our rate is $XX an hour. Rates vary considerably across the city and dealerships generally sit at the higher end. Any shop should tell you their rate before you book — if one will not, that is worth noting.
-
$XX, applied to the repair if you have us do the work.
-
Yes. Where a fault can be priced without inspection we will give you a range over the phone. Where it genuinely cannot, we will say so rather than invent a number.
-
No. A manufacturer cannot require dealer servicing to keep a warranty valid, and to deny a claim they would have to prove our work caused the failure. Keep your itemised invoices and you are covered.
-
Usually on labour, yes, and often on parts. Not always — for some diagnostic work needing manufacturer-specific tooling the dealer is the right call and we will tell you when that is the case.
-
Quality aftermarket as standard, OEM where it matters or where you ask. We will explain the trade-off on anything significant rather than deciding for you.
-
Yes, provided it is done to the manufacturer's specification and documented. Both are standard here.
-
Then we have not finished. Bring it back.
